Synchronize your iPhone address book to your Google contacts

Section: iPhone + Communications, Email/IM, iPhone SDK & Apps

iPhone Google Contacts Sync

Among the good things brought about by the recently released Mac OS X 10.5.3 is a new feature which enables iPhone users to sync their address book with their Google contacts. It’s a pretty neat application that makes the otherwise daunting task of syncing your contact lists easier to do.

But before you try to synchronize your iPhone address book with Google contacts, it’s always a good thing to back up your iPhone contacts first. That way, you won’t end up having an iPhone that seems like it comes right out of the box with a fresh contact-less address book, in case something goes wrong while your synchronizing. If you’re one of those who don’t need to be reminded about this, then go ahead and start synchronizing now. It’s as simple as going to your Address Book menu, choose Preferences and then hit the Synchronize with Google link. After entering your account and password, the task becomes automatic everytime you sync your iPhone with your Google contacts.

Incidentally, the Google Mac blog wants to inform us that the sync software uses Google Data APIs when communicating with Gmail’s contact. If you are a hard core techie kind of Apple fan, you’d certainly know how important it is for you to know that information.

Apple’s current status on product orders according to an analyst

Section: Apple, iPod + iTunes, iPod touch, iPod Family, iPod, iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, Mac + Computers, Desktops, iMac, Laptops, MacBook Air, MacBook, MacBook Pro

iPod ClassicFBR Capital Markets analyst Craig Berger has been surveying Apple’s supply chain and found some interesting stats to crunch.  For one, he has found that in the June quarter, Apple will increase its iPod supply by about 15% compared to the March quarter.  Berger says, “We see greater Shuffle, Classic, and Nano builds slightly offset by fewer Touch builds with greater Shuffle builds accounting for most of the increased iPod builds.” Along with this, he has found that Apple’s desktop supply will decline by about 15% due to higher notebook production.  This comes as no surprise to me as many customers are switching to more portable machines in this day and age.

It’s time for some analyzing of my own.  The reason the iPod production is being lowered may be because Apple is expecting large 3G iPhone sales when they announce it this June.  With customers switching over to an iPhone, they will have no need to buy another iPod.  Also, the quote above states that the iPod Touch builds are being lowered the most.  Again, this could be because it is so similar to the iPhone and Apple may be expecting many people to just go for the more functional device even despite being forced into an AT&T contract.

Glimpse at the Future or Bad Photoshop Job?

Section: Apple, Apple News, Rumors, Updates, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps

possible3giphoneIn the last two or so months, there has been a myriad of 3G iPhone rumors.  So many, in fact, it has really become hard to tell the plausible from the impossible.  There have been supposed leaked photos, new shipping manifest items, and dates supposedly confirmed.  Here is one more thing to add to your list of possible 3G iPhone confirmation.

A post in a MacRumors forum by mrat93 exposes a hidden file in the iPhone SDK that could be a preview of the next iPhone.  The poster found a document titled iPhone.icns (shown above in comparison to the current iPhone).  The basic design of the icon shows little overall design change from the current version, which brings up the question about a possible bad Photoshop job that somehow snuck into the SDK.  Whatever it is, it is hard to tell the intended size, as the image above comparing the icon found and the current iPhone shows the new icon merely enlarged to a similar size to the current design.  Or it could just be another hoax.  I don’t currently posses an iPhone SDK to test this on, but if you wouldn’t mind confirming the existence of said iPhone.icns located at Developer>Platforms>Aspen.platform>Developer>Library>Xcode>Plug-ins>AspenSupport.xcodeplugin>Contents>Resources, please be sure to notify us in the comments.

Although this possible design does look pretty sweet, its nothing compared to Isamu Sanada’s iPhone 0805.

Hello iPhone SDK Beta 6

Section: Apple, Apple News, Updates, Conferences, WWDC, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps, Operating Systems, Leopard, OS-X

iPhone SDK Beta 6 ImageApple iPhone developer’s can now download iPhone beta SDK 6 from Apple as long as they have also downloaded today’s software updates, 10.5.3.  This release, 9m2192, comes in at about 1221.8 MBs (which is quite hefty) and includes the usual bug fixes that come with updates.  You can head on over to the iPhone Dev Center to download this file.  According to the read me PDF, this update more specifically:

  1. Beta release 4 adds support for Open GL ES within the iPhone Simulator.
  2. Code signing is now enforced on devices.
  3. Beta release 3 fixes bugs and adds support for the latest iPhone OS.
  4. Beta release 2 adds support for building iPhone user interfaces using the Interface Builder tool.

These two updates came at the perfect time for both Mac and iPhone users.  Of course, any Leopard update is great for Mac users and will fix many problems.  With an official iPhone SDK announcement expected to be made at this year’s WWDC, the new beta is just another step closer to a finished product.  I find it strange that Apple released these updates before WWDC, but I’m not complaining at all as I already have them downloaded.  Go check ‘em out!

Intel delay will push back MacBook orders

Section: Apple, Mac + Computers, Laptops, MacBook

IntelApple’s redesigned MacBooks that were scheduled to use Intel’s upcoming Montevina Centrino 2 chip will have to wait until late summer to be launched due to a delay in volume shipments of the product.  This platform was expected to be launched at the end of this month, and one reason for this delay according to a Wall Street analyst was due to trouble getting the chip passed by the FCC.  Bill Kircos, an Intel spokesman, added, “There were two minor issues we found during final testing – one with our integrated graphic chipsets, which we have found a workaround for but need to re-screen our parts, and second around our wireless WiFi chip, which was a paperwork and certification mistake we made.”

The two key technologies for this chip are 802.11n and WiMAX which are both still relatively new technologies, so this delay hasn’t come as a big hit to Intel.  However, it is still disappointing to see that the new Apple MacBooks will have to be delayed for so long.  Thankfully, they will (hopefully) be available in time for the end of the school shopping season so they will still be able to get a lot of sales.  Until then, you’re just going to have to stick with the one you have now, so I hope you weren’t waiting for this update.

Gadgetell Review: Griffin iPhone cases; ClearBoost, Wave case

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone Accessories, Features, Review

Griffin ClearBoost and Wave case for iPhone

Product: Griffin Technology ClearBoost and Wave case

Price and Availability: Both currently available, the ClearBoost is $29.99 and the Wave case is $24.99

Rating: ClearBoost 5/10 and Wave case 9/10

Pros: Both cases offered solid protection for the iPhone along with the display.

Cons: A personal issue, but they both make using the Apple dock difficult.

Overall: If you are looking for a solid case or a signal booster, then either of these from Griffin would make an ideal option to consider.

Both the ClearBoost and the Wave case ship with a clear film style protector for the display and also a cleaning cloth.

First up we have the Wave case:

This case is, while ultimately just another case that is available for the iPhone, one that offers, at least in our humble opinion some style along with protection. The case comes in a bunch of colors to include black, blue, green, orange, red, pink or white and is made out of a hard polycarbonate material. The case has a slight rubber feel to it, which makes it a little easier to grab without worrying about the phone slipping from your hand, a welcome change coming from someone who was used to not having a case.

Aside from being a little tricky the first few times you attempt to put it on, the case feels solid and will offer the protection that you are looking for. It has a cut out on the top, bottom, back and left side that allow access to the headphone jack, SIM slot, power button, speakers, dock connection, camera lens as well as the side mute and volume controls. The big drawback for me, is the lack of ability to easily use the dock that comes with the iPhone. This case, similar to most cases cannot be used, so in order to dock the phone the case has to come on and off, which is tolerable, but not what I prefer personally.

I can also say with some assurance that it will protect the phone, I had the misfortune of dropping mine two or three times while using the case. Granted it was dropped on relatively soft (carpet-type) surfaces, but the case stayed on and the iPhone stayed intact. A definite plus!

Next up we have the ClearBoost:

This case was surprisingly better than I had expected. I should clarify after giving it a 5/10 for a review, the middle of the line number comes a great deal from the lack of style that this case offers. While it seemed to work well in helping the signal, I feel that the iPhone is a sleek and nicely designed phone and the case should do that justice, which this does not. I have had this case for several weeks now and used it for a while, because honestly I did not ever expect it to work.

The case itself is made from a polycarbonate and promises hard-shell protection as well as an improved connection. Similar to the Wave case, this also offers cut outs so you can still access the phones controls and features.

There are specific ways to put your phone in a field test mode, which I did on a few occasions and was able to see the actual improvements. I however wanted to just use it, so I should say that while the testing that I formed my opinions on were very unscientific, it seemed to offer some help. I often travel a 50 mile stretch of highway that at times will leave me with the dreaded no-bars, which, as I am sure you know means you cannot make or receive calls well. Having taken this road on a regular basis, I have learned those spots and have just dealt with the dead areas. This case did seem to help in those dead areas. I did not always see an increase in bars on the display, but was able to make calls where I normally could not. The first time this worked I honestly chalked it up to coincidence, but given several more trips, some with and some without the case, it was appearing to work. To me this case was a great option to have with me, and was used for those trips, but quickly came off when I was in an area with normal reception.

Bottom Line: Griffin makes great products and in that respect these cases are not any different. If you are looking for either a stylish or signal booster case, then these should be worth your money.

This year iPhone developer camp will be held at Adobe Systems in San Francisco, California from August 1-3, 2008. It’s a great opportunity for those who focus on iPhone and iPod Touch development. You’ll have the opportunity to create applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch. You’ll also have the chance to mingle with some of the best designers, developers, and testers. It’s a great opportunity and giving you the opportunity to learn as well as share your expertise with others.

According to Steve Sande spokesperson Raven Zachary said that the organizers are expecting all 500 spaces for the event to fill quickly this year. This is largely due to the hype surrounding the iPhone SDK and the sellout crowd at WWDC 2008. Attendees will be announced in July. Registering does not guarantee you a spot so it’s best to sign up early. Don’t wait to sign up, log onto the registration website and claim your spot now. Hopefully, when the attendees are announced in July you’ll be on the list of those attending this event. iPhoneDevCamp 2 is a follow-up to iPhoneDevCamp 1.

Although this is an event, I would love to attend I won’t be able to however I’m looking forward to see what amazing applications surface after this long weekend.

LG starts shipping 3 home theather systems for the iPod

Section: iPod + iTunes, iPod Accessories, Docks & Speakers

LG Home Entertainment System for iPods

For those who have been toying with the idea of using their iPods for home entertainment purposes but are undecided on which system to get, LG is giving us 3 options to answer this need. These systems are the LG LHT888, LHT 874 and LHT 854. Let me warn you though that because of their seemingly great features, you might still find a hard time deciding on which of the three to get.

Spearheading these troika of LG home entertainment systems is the LHT888 which is capable of giving out 5.1-channel surround with 700-watt of power and wireless rear channels. This baby can be put into a good use for playing videos as it is capable of upscaling videos up to 1080p through its HDMI connect. In addition, it also supports CEC multi-device control when attached to Blu-ray players, TVs and other devices.

Next we also have the LHT874 and LHT854 which are both toned down version of the LHT888. But that doesn’t mean that these two models are far inferior than the LHT888 in terms of features. Certainly not, as most of the advanced features of the LHT888 are also in these two systems. What differentiates these two from the LHT888 are the floorstanding speakers setup of the LHT874 for its front channels while its rear speakers sport the wireless setup and the all-wired arrangement of the LHT854.

If by now you are already confused as to which home entertainment system to get for your iPods, their prices may help you decide. The LHT888 retails for $650, the LHT874 for $480 and the LHT854 for $300.

Are we really looking at a white 3G iPhone?

Section: Apple News, Rumors, iPhone + Communications, iPhone

White 3G iPhoneIn the mood for some juicy rumors or a news item that may perk up your day? Here’s something from Dutch community site iPhoneclub.nl with some fresh pictures of a new iPhone model. No, we’re not speaking of the 3G iPhone, as we all know that is coming upon us - but rather of a new white iPhone with a curved back.

Apparently, the photos were sent by the source, who wants to remain anonymous for obvious reasons, to both iPhoneclub.nl and Macfreak.nl (these guys must be having the luckiest day for their sites by now). The source also said that those pictures came from a European accessory maker, probably preparing some nifty accessories to go along with the white iPhone.

Although it may seem pretty legit, the pictures however don’t confirm earlier rumors that the new iPhone would have video chat and video calling features since it doesn’t seem to have a front camera. Or it might be hidden somewhere, who knows? What the pictures may have confirmed is that the new iPhone would have a bigger battery because of its curved back. Why would the iPhone need a bigger battery? To support the power demand of its 3G functionality.

With that, we live it up to your dear readers to judge if those pictures are legit or not.

iFund only backing two developers?

Section: Apple, Apple News, Conferences, WWDC, iPhone + Communications, iPhone, iPhone SDK & Apps

iFund Program

iFund, the $100 million program set up by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers for the iPhone, is currently only supporting two developers, which means only two apps will come from it so far.  According to BussinessWeek, these apps are Pelago’s Whrrl and iControl.  Whrrl simply uses the iPhone’s map capabilities and offers more details to particular areas you are searching in, such as a restaurant.  On the other hand, iControl, which I wrote about as a rumor a while back, would turn your iPhone into a universal remote for your home, which I think would be pretty awesome.

I find it somewhat strange that such a large program with so much money involved would only produce two applications.  Although both of these applications sound extremely useful and interesting, I would have though there would be much more.  Since we won’t know for sure what’s going on until June 9th at WWDC, there could be more behind this.  As for now, all we can do as usual is speculate on what this might mean or what is really going to be announced.  So go ahead, let the rumors fly!

Second Alabama store to open this Saturday

Section: Apple, Apple News, Retail & Apple Store

Apple Store AlabamaThis Saturday, May 31st, at 10 A.M. Apple plans to open its second store in Alabama.  This store will be named the Bridge Street Store, but its official location is at 6782 Old Madison Pike, Huntsville, AL.  If you are from Alabama and are on the edge of your seat in anticipation, you can check out the store’s website over at Apple for now.  The first scheduled workshop for this store as of now is for iPhoto on June 2nd at 3 P.M.  Feel free to head on over there and catch some opening day shots for us to post!

With all these new Apple Stores opening up, it’s good to see how much Apple is expanding.  Hopefully this will help take the load off of individual stores for upcoming product launch days (maybe a 3G iPhone?), therefore making more stock available.  Either way, more stores can only be a good thing.  Congratulations fellow Apple fans in Alabama, let us know how it is!

QuarkXPress 8: Sleek Interface, Better Typography

QuarkXPress 8Quark Inc. announced QuarkXPress 8 at the Drupa printing exhibition in Düsseldorf today, the latest version of the high-end design tool for Mac and Windows. Many of the changes to QuarkXPress are in the areas of user interface and workflow, which were criticized by many users after the long-delayed release of QuarkXPress 7.

Some of the interface enhancements include:

  • A picture content tool for moving, rotating, and scaling images in real-time
  • New Bézier Pen Tools
  • An enhanced measurements palette with new controls for modifying drop-shadows
  • Drag-and-drop from the desktop, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto, MIcrosoft Word, and the hundreds of other applications that support drag-and-drop
  • Instant access to master pages and exports to PDF, SWF, HTML and EPS

QuarkXPress 8 offers improved typographical controls for designers, including hanging characters with multiple presets. There’s also built-in support for Flash content creation, which formerly required the purchase of Quark Interactive Designer

Quark also noted that designers who purchase QuarkXPress 7 at regular price between today and August 1, 2008 and those who purchased QuarkXPress 7 or an upgrade between May 1 and today will receive the upgrade for free. The package is expected to ship within 60 days, and no final pricing has been announced.

TUAW Review: Dreamweaver CS4 beta

Adobe Dreamweaver, for better or for worse, is probably the most mature integrated development environment for website building for the Mac. Professionals might be supplied with Dreamweaver through their company’s site-license; beginners might get Dreamweaver on the recommendation of a friend.

Hard-core coders have their favorite text editors and IDEs. This review is not for them. To be clear, I use Coda and TextMate almost exclusively for web development. This review is for people who use Dreamweaver primarily as a WYSIWYG HTML editor (as much as that makes me cringe). But that’s what Dreamweaver does best.

The public beta of Dreamweaver CS4 dropped on Tuesday, and I’m going to show you what’s new and different about Dreamweaver CS4, and if it’s worth the upgrade.

Weavin’ your dreams, after the jump.

Address Book - Google syncing without iPod touch or iPhone

Did last night’s news of 10.5.3 boasting Google contact syncing with iPhone and iPod touch owners get you down? Well, LifeHacker hopes to lift your spirits as they tell you how to enable Google syncing in Address Book.app without ever syncing an iPhone or iPod touch.

The process requires you to edit some .plist files within Address Book.app. LifeHacker notes that the .plist entry only occurs when you sync some type of iPod first. So, you will need to do at least one sync for the entry to show up. Some of the comments seem to suggest that the .plist entry will change back to the original value once you sync an iPod a couple times. Even still, this is a cool hack.

iDMG

If you have ever created a DMG image using Disk Utility, you know how hard it can be. iDMG hopes to make this process easier. This application allows you to easily drag and drop files, applications, or whatever you choose onto iDMG, select a few options and hit the “Create button.”

The only downside to the application is the many times you encounter the slow “I am working” message. Other than that, this application offers a bunch of options like encryption, custom icons, and multiple file systems. In addition, iDMG uses the Sparkle update framework and Growl notifications.

This application is available for download as freeware (donations accepted) from the developer’s website.
